![]() ![]() I was very disappointed in The Drowned World. Yet another book added to my to-read list. ![]() Ballard is the author of Empire of the Sun which is a movie I remember fondly and I think I have seen it more than several times. It would be interesting to know if Vandermeer counts this book as an influence. I feel like this book is a precursor to movies like Mad Max and novels like Jeff Vandermeer's Southern Reach trilogy. We are in for some real destruction, friends. I found all that interesting and plausible given our continual inability to control climate change. ![]() The dystopian, end-of-civilization scenario of rising seas and waters and overgrown vegetation and drowned cities is one we can certainly relate to today. While the overall story is a good one, and I feel, well written, the stilted "hey old chap" dialogue of the characters was a turn off and there is a lot of sexist dialogue written around the sole female character, Beatrice Dahl. Most of the authors and books were from the 50s and 60s.a lot of classic science fiction by authors like Heinlein, Clarke, Asimov, etc.but Ballard's themes are more experimental and forward thinking. I was immediately reminded of all the science fiction books in my middle and high school library when I read this. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In addition, it is also the first step if you have to reinstall Windows. A growth mindset inspires a child to understand that intelligence and ability is not fixed, but that it can be developed. ![]() This was Dr Maria Montessori’s almost prophetic way of anticipating the modern movement of the “ g rowth mindset”. The Dot, Ish and Sky Color tell tales about creativity - encouraging children to express individuality and, in true Montessori style, to focus on the “ process, not the product”. But these special books also address concepts that were close to Maria Montessori's heart and mind! The book was so full of practical ways I could rethink and reshape my work (and world!) that it took months to read and integrate the lessons. One of the great things about this book is how funny it is. Teresa: The Drawing of the Three and The Wastelands are probably my favorite books in this series. Roland meets the people who will come with him on his quest for the Dark Tower, and he gets his first actual glimpses at our world. In The Drawing of the Three, we see that future come to fruition. The man in black, whom he’d been pursuing throughout The Gunslinger, told him his future in three cards: The Prisoner, The Lady of Shadows, and Death (“but not for you”). When we saw him last, Roland the gunslinger was sitting on a beach, alone, pondering a prophesy. ![]() ![]() ![]() It had been their Christmas gift to themselves for the past four years. Nowhere is this clearer than in the ending to the story, which is where most critics and students of ‘Cathedral’ focus the majority of their analysis (and speculation). And ‘Cathedral’ is as notable for what it doesn’t tell us as for what it does, and the narrator’s account of his evening spent with Robert and his wife invites us to ponder further questions. Carver himself expressed a dislike for this term, but we can certainly see a line between someone like Ernest Hemingway and Carver’s own short stories. Raymond Carver’s work is often associated with the term minimalism, a literary technique marked by a simple descriptive style (often utilising short, clipped sentences) and spare dialogue. ![]() |
